THE CHILDREN'S SOCIETY
Reaching out for a better future
"If you believe every child deserves a decent chance in life, you believe in everything we stand for."
Making the difference that will last a lifetime;
Since 1881, the Children's Society have been helping children who have been deprived of the start in life most of us take for granted.

As a charity, we do the concrete things needed: giving runaways a safe refuge from the streets, ensuring children get educated rather than excluded, promoting programmes which provide an alternative to prison custody for young teenagers and working with children to create communities which are safe to live in.

We work to give children a voice;
We not only listen to what they have to say, but help them articulate their needs to planners, policymakers and educators. Rather than merely patching up the problems in society, we are working as a force for change to develope long-term solutions to the very serious problems faced by youngsters every day.

"Each year 100,000 children, some as young as eight, run away."

Most young runaways are fleeing from violence or abuse at home or in care.
On the stret they can fall prey to drug dealers, pimps or criminals. The Children's Society runs safe houses and outreach programmes to protect young runaways whilre they build a normal life.

"Almost all the children we work with suffer daily from poverty."

One in three children in Britain is born into poverty. Living in sink estates with no play or leisure facilities of any kind and where local authorities have dispaired in their attempts to make lasting improvements, it's no wonder that the children have no respect for them or authority in general.

The Children's Society is working on the poorest communities  to help regenerate them with the help and active participation of children.

"Children as young as four are being excluded from school."

Far too many children are still being excluded from school.
The Children's Society runs prijects which help to overcome their problems by getting to the root causes of their disruptive behaviour.

"For many youngsters, their first time in prison turns into a life sentance."

Prisons are widely recognised as colleges of crime. Yet jail custody is the fate of most 15-16 year olds on remand even though most will not be given a prison sentance when they come to trial.
The Children's Society is the only national charity working to get 15-16 year olds on remand out of prison. Through our Remand Rescue, and Bail Support programmes, we help them face up to the consequences of their offending and help them lead useful lives again.
